Hawthorne Elementary hosted their annual holiday program titled "A Holiday of Music" on Dec. 15. Congratulations to our Music Director, Mrs. Mary Wynn, for a beautiful holiday program. Two shows were presented to accommodate the many families that attended. Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grades along with the Hawthorne Choir performed at 9:30 am and grades 1 and 3 with the choir performed at 1:45 pm. The staff of Hawthorne Elementary would like to wish our families and community a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for your support of our school during the first semester. We will look forward to seeing the students on Jan. 3, 2011!

The Hawthorne Holiday Bazaar will be held on Saturday, December 4, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Come visit our vendors and do your holiday shopping at the bazaar. Over 70 booths for your shopping pleasure! Free admission! Enjoy a lively auction from 2:00-3:00 p.m. with lots of great items being auctioned off including an American Girl doll. Theme baskets will also be auctioned. A snack bar will also be open.

The Hawthorne PTA will be holding its annual Theme Basket Auction during the Holiday Bazaar. Each classroom has adopted a theme and will be creating a basket incorporating items donated by parents.

Hawthorne's Academic Reception for the first grading period was held on November 3rd. The event was a great success with over 200 in attendance. Awards were presented for High Honor Roll and Honor Roll. Over 25% of the school population qualified for the Honor Roll program.

The purpose of the Dad's Club is to have some fun with your kids at school by participating in special activities. If you are a dad, grandparent, or guardian we would like for you to join us. Patti and Jeff Rowlett are Hawthorne parents that operate Cutz & Curlz Family Hair Care across the street from Hawthorne at 8228 Rawles Ave. They would like to help the students of Hawthorne earn the money for new playground equipment. Any Hawthorne family can visit Cutz & Curlz and a portion of the fee will go towards playground equipment. The Rowlett's will donate $1 from every haircut and $5 from every perm back to Hawthorne. Math Fact Frenzy will begin in September. This is a program where students will take timed tests (40 facts in 2 minutes!) twice a month to earn certificates and cool colored wristbands that say: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This program will last for the remainder of the year. Memorizing basic math facts will help your child build confidence and better prepare them for the ISTEP+ test. Students are busy learning their math facts at school, but we need your help at home! To help your child prepare for the new Math Fact Frenzy program, please take time to practice math facts at least 5 min. each day. This can be done in the car, at the dinner table or even between TV shows!

Student agendas are an important communication tool at Hawthorne between parents and teachers. It also contains a copy of the Hawthorne Student Handbook and a calendar of school year events. Every child in grades 1 through 4 are expected to carry one each day. The cost is $7.00.

Hawthorne congratulates Amanda Williams, kindergarten teacher, as Hawthorne's Teacher of the Year. Amanda has been a kindergarten teacher at Hawthorne for nine years. We also congratulate Elizabeth Harris for being selected the Hawthorne Support Person of the Year. She has been an instructional assistant since February, 2007. Both of these wonderful individuals have been an integral part of Hawthorne's award-winning team!

The Hawthorne Community Wellness Center and Hawthorne Elementary School are pleased to announce that we have found a new nurse practitioner. Beginning April 8, 2010, Johnnie Springman, NP will begin seeing patients at the Wellness Center. The hours of operation will be as follows:
Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
As always, the Hawthorne Community Wellness Center sees patients by appointment only. They will begin scheduling appointment's starting Tuesday, April 6. If you would like to schedule an appointment or have any questions, please contact the Wellness Center at (317) 532-3999.
